Here's a new medley for you, with a dozen new Splotch Monsters, all competing in a contest of sorts to see who has the most nastiest breath of the bunch. Of course, in Splotch Monster land, oral hygiene is not a priority, and the worse you stink, the more likable you become.

Last Friday night, the Leesburg, VA First Friday gallery walk reopened, and thanks to the unseasonably good weather we've been having, many people were out and about. King Street Coffee was no exception, and I feel very lucky to have had the weather on my side, being February is usually a miserable month here in the NOVA region. I was feeling like crud all day Friday and most of the week, as if my head was about to burst, but had to be present for the opening of my Splotch Monster show. Maybe it was the Moroccan Mint Tea I drank upon arrival, or perhaps it was the good energy I got from people from the get go, but I started to feel a lot better real fast. Some wonderful colleagues of mine came in and bought up some pieces right away, and even a reporter from a great local newspaper kindly dropped by to do a story, which I'll post more about when the story is published. I had a few more sales later on, with a couple still pending, but the real highlight was the folks who showed up - friends, colleagues, students, and the curious observer from off the street. There was a real good energy all evening, and a few hours in, you could barely move in the place, for better or worse. I made sure to bring a stack of pre-painted Splotch Forms on paper and a bunch of pens for folks to draw with, and by the end of the night, almost everyone in the room was having fun drawing until the entire stack was completely gone. It's funny 'cause at first, people seemed kind of hesitant, not sure what to make of it, then soon it caught on and spread like a wildfire. Creativity can be contagious, and one man even looked at me and said how he's never seen anything like it before, smiling as his little boy was having a blast drawing away. It was amazing what people were doing with the paint splotches Friday night, and it reminded me of when I visited Philly last Fall for an art show. I honestly wish I took more pictures. This is what I had been hoping for with this show, and more than any sales or recognition I wanted the show to not be just about me, but about everyone present and the creativity we're all capable of. Thanks once again to Kimberly and the King Street Coffee folks, to my friends and colleagues who stopped in to say hi, to the awesome individuals who believed in my work enough to spend some money on it, to some of my wonderful students and their parents who braved the crowd, to the great folks who helped to get the word out, to the amazing local singers and musicians who kept us entertained throughout the evening, and to the people who came by to talk a little or shake my hand and do some drawing of their own. I am truly grateful beyond words. In the meantime, I did take some photos below, after the opening, to give readers here an idea of what I had on exhibit. My Splotch Monster art will be hanging for the remainder of the month at King Street Coffee, so stop on by, have a cup and take a look if you're in and around the area.

It's due time for another Splotch Monster post, and it's February already! I've been kind of sick all week with an annoying head cold but managed to feel a lot better yesterday and be well enough to be present at my art opening in Leesburg, which left my wife and I with such a good, happy feeling when we got home, exhausted but high from a great evening of art, creativity, friends, music and fun. I'll make sure to post more about that tomorrow here. In the meantime, here's a Splotch Monster made from a photo I took from an ink tray left in the sink in my art classroom, following a printmaking lesson. Talk about a happy accident!

hanging up some art

Who's that balding fool in khakis with a pair of scissors? That guy would be me hanging up my artwork today at King Street Coffee. My wife had her wonderful work up there for the months of December and January and even made some sales, however today I had to take it down and replace it with my relatively crazier creations. Leesburg is kind of a conservative town with a very traditional art scene, though I had a very positive response when I first started making and selling my Splotch Monster art at an outdoor sale in town around Christmas a couple of years ago, to my pleasant surprise, and I got some real nice words and inquires from folks today while putting up work. For the most part, I've got nothing against the more traditional work that dominates most of the galleries around these parts, and even do work slightly along those lines myself. As long as it's sincere and original in some way, I can respect that. However, there's a whole world of art out there beyond realism and impressionist landscapes, be it conceptual, lowbrow, street art, whatever you want to call it, and I'm glad I can be a tiny part of that, not because it's supposedly cool or hip, but because that's what I like to do and see. Anyhow, the weather has still been unseasonably warm for late January, and I am not complaining. The First Friday art walk here in town is starting up again in February, after a hiatus in January, and even though there's the possibility of rain, at least it won't be cold, snowy or icy, which is typical of February weather in Northern Virginia. I'm really looking forward to it, but after spending most of the day taking down then hanging up art today, Kris and I are looking forward to simply doing absolutely nothing next Saturday and Sunday. Can I have an amen?!?

made some flyers and some books

I finally got some fliers and books made for the show. I printed the fliers out on both white card stock and quality photo paper. The ones on the photo paper came out real nice and vibrant, while the card stock fliers have a great muted look. The books from Artscow arrived late last week as well, and I'm very pleased at the quality of these hardbound books. I decided to focus on my favorite black and white Splotch Monsters and keep the book a picture book/art book, with very minimal text.

Last night I finished another Splotch Monster word medley made for my upcoming show at King Street Coffee. The original is directly below, measuring 20" x 16", not quite as large as the first medley I made for the show, but still bigger than I usually work with these. Above is a slightly tweaked version, filtered through Picnik. I've always wondered where this phrase came from, so I got some help from Wikipedia. In the image here, Joe is the letter E, who was made from coffee. As you might have noticed, Joe is a little worried about the suggestion made in this image, and the neighboring letter O monster isn't helping him in this department. Poor Joe! In the meantime I'm looking forward to finally getting this piece framed today, as well as reframing some other pieces, and getting them hung up tomorrow. It's always both an exciting and equally grueling process, framing and hanging your own work, but always rewarding in the end. Enjoy your weekend!

Watch the snow whirl and twirl

as icy winds begin the wrath

of Jack Frost's frozen world.

Here's another one made from an I-phone shot, filtered through Instagram, then through Picnik for the final results. I took the photo at the end of last Fall, when the leaves left some beautiful impressions following some rainfall. Now it's Winter and we've got snow and ice out here in Northern VA, and the resulting monster looks a little bit like a busy, if not furious Jack Frost to me, which is very appropriate after last night's weather.

Many times I'll see a paint splat on the road or street and am either in too much of a hurry or don't have a camera to take a picture with, though not so much anymore thanks to my I-phone, which is what this one was taken with, later filtered in Instagram. I then did some tweaking in Picnik for both the Splotch Form and the monster. The photo was taken at the Leesburg, VA Home Depot parking lot, where you'll find many good paint splats.

I made a quick little promo postcard from the "Tea Party" piece for my little show at King Street Coffee in February, with the aid of Picnik. Speaking of, I heard that Picnik will be going away for good in April? Say it isn't so!! It was always so easy to do some simple tweaking once I uploaded images to Flickr. I wonder if they'll use another service like Picnik. If not, I'll have to go back to Photoshop or the software that came with my computer, which according to the Mac Store's Genius Bar dude, is now "vintage" by Apple standards, and is not even serviceable (it's only about six years old)! Anyhow, I'll be sending both digital and physical copies of these out soon! In the meantime, expect today's and tomorrow's monsters posted tomorrow. Happy weekend!

Above are six new Splotch Monsters and their accompanying Splotch Forms. Originally, I was only going to use tea for the forms, but I thought it might be a lot more interesting to get more layers from coffee as well, which is much darker. I guess these were inspired by the tea (and coffee) theme in the big medley posted recently here. I tried to keep the color-scheme pretty uniform and almost monochromatic with these six, which covered the last few days and will take us up through Thursday. I'm not sure if I'll use any of these in the upcoming coffee house show, though I probably should. Until Friday, enjoy your week!

artist interview at russian moleskine site

A couple of weeks ago I was contacted via Flickr about an interview by Anastasya Bolshakova, who runs the Russian art site "My Moleskine". Today the interview was posted, and I let Anastasya choose any images of mine she thought went well with the words. She does an excellent and thorough job at the site, which I can appreciate, after interviewing artists about their work on a monthly basis for a couple of years myself. It's not an easy process, believe me. Below I decided to post the English translation for your reading pleasure. Also, plenty of Splotch Monsters were selected for the interview. A big thanks goes out to Anastasya and My Moleskine for taking the time to do this! In the meantime, stay tuned for some new tea/coffee hybrid monsters up here soon.

Q: When did you start using a Moleskine? What Moleskine is most convenient to draw in?

A: I began using Moleskine sketchbooks about four years ago, when I began drawing again on a regular basis. My favorite are the watercolor Moleskines, any size, because they're durable and you can use all kinds of media in them, without causing any damage.

Q: Now, you - the recognized, well-known artist. Has this changed something in you?

A: First off, thanks! I'm glad you think so, and though I'm not by any means famous, it makes me very happy when people appreciate my art work. I think anytime someone reacts in a positive way to my work, it shows they believe in me, and as a result, I want to improve and get my stuff out there some more.

Q: Who do you teach and what does teaching mean to you?

A: I teach art to kids from age five-to -twelve for ten months of the year, then for a couple of weeks in the summer, to teenagers. Teaching means a lot to me, because I want to teach young people to have the ability to think creatively and think for themselves. There are so many forces out there that are trying to do just the opposite, so in a sense, I feel like it's somewhat of a mission I'm on. Also, if I make a kid happy and help them find something inside that makes them proud of themselves, then I'm doing something right.

Q: Do you participate in any art exhibitions?

A: I've been making more of an effort to get my art in shows these past couple of years, both locally and on an international level. Sometimes it pays off, and sometimes it doesn't, and while it can be tough at first to get rid of your work, there's nothing quite like the feeling of having someone purchase your art. The places and spaces my art is being shown in lately is pretty diverse and interesting.

Q: Do you have experience illustrating children's books and would you like to try?

A: I don't, but I certainly would like to. I've been knocking some ideas around in my head lately for some books, but have yet to make a real, concerted effort in formulating a concise idea and contacting some publishers. Speaking of, I just got some extremely good news from a publisher in London, who will be using some of my artwork in a hugely popular book series, which I'm psyched out of my mind about. For now though, I'm keeping it mostly top secret, and only a few people know about it. I will say the book is due to drop Halloween, 2012. ;)

Q: Describe your life in a few sentences.

A: I listen to a lot of music and think of life being similar to that of a constant, underlying rhythm, with layers of beats and different polyrhythms coming and going. While there is a constant, there are also changes taking place in time. The goal is to keep it rich and somewhat interesting.

Q: Who or what influenced you in your vision as an artist?

A: I think my first visit to the Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh, while on a field trip in high school, completely blew open the doors for me, as far as what my perception of what art was at the time. Seeing all of this amazing, modern and postmodern work in person at the time, merged with the music I began listening to as well back then, opened up a whole new, far more interesting world for me.

Q: What do you think of that Time Magazine named «Abstract protester» man of the year?

A: You know, I didn't get a chance to read that article yet and the work on the cover looked a lot like that of Shepard Fairey's. As far as the protester, I think it's perfect. I think there is a definite shift going on right now in the world, and the people are finally beginning to wake from their zombie-like slumbers and fight back. There are still those who are content to be controlled, manipulated and fooled, mostly out of fear and as a result of brainwashing, but it's changing. Their oppressors and the wrongdoers of the world are losing their grip and are going down, one by one. Theocrats, dictators and ruthlessly greedy, narcissistic twits won't go down without a fight however, and it's very unfortunate that violence sometimes has to pave the road to independence. There will be turbulent times and I can only hope to live long enough to see the day when people respect each other on a mass level and finally begin to live each day connecting with their higher selves, rather than indulging in the very opposite. If such were the case, we wouldn't have greed and hatred and the need for protesters. I refuse to believe that this is being too idealistic.

Q: Are you attracted to the field of art that is video art?

A: Absolutely! I'm a child of the eighties, when MTV played music videos of all kinds. So, I actively keep a close eye out for good videos to go along with some of my favorite music, and it's incredible what folks are doing. I've got a friend who also works at some galleries in Pittsburgh, where they do all types of awesome, big conceptual sound and video art shows, featuring work from around the world. So I'm always seeing what's new in the world of video art. While I really don't make that kind of stuff myself, yet at least, I really love most of it.

Q: What things do you need to live in harmony with yourself?

A: Love first and foremost. Hearing good music. And last but not least, making art that is true to me.

So here's my latest monster medley, covering the past twelve days, with twelve new Splotch Monsters. This is the second time I made a medley spelling out a message, this time being "Drink More Tea". I must note that these monsters are in no way, shape or form affiliated with any political organizations whatsoever. Anyway, this one's a big one, measuring 20" x 30", created for my upcoming show at King Street Coffee in February (who happen to serve excellent tea, as well as coffee btw). The letter "T" was also made with mostly tea. In the meantime, I'm still preparing for the show and I'll be buying frames and framing all the pieces this weekend. Please stay tuned for more monsters as part of a "tea creatures" series beginning tomorrow!

what's new in splotch monster land

Just in case anyone who follows this blog is wondering where on earth are the new monsters, you need not worry, 'cause I've been busier than ever in Splotch Monster land. First off, I'm working on completing a twelve-monster medley for an upcoming show here in Leesburg, which I'll post any day now. The show is in February and it's been quite a process sorting out, choosing, and weeding out pieces and selecting frames for this small but fine space, which I'll also post more about soon.

Perhaps the most exiting news, as far as Splotch Monsters are concerned, has something to do with a new book coming out around Halloween, 2012. Early last October, I was contacted via Flickr about possibly including some of my monsters in the upcoming Stickerbomb 3 book, dedicated completely to monsters. Being very fond of this hugely popular series and knowing a good deal of the work in these books are by some of the finest contemporary artists alive caused me to have to pause and pinch myself. Was this a joke? Well, I gladly and promptly sent them about a dozen samples and a link to my Flickr page and crossed my fingers. I grew a little concerned when I didn't get any word yet by January 1st, then a few days ago I got the good news. I didn't want to say anything yet (I can be oddly superstitious about these things sometimes) but why not. I love this book series and the work The SRK do, and now I'm looking forward to October more than ever!

This morning I also completed a sixty-page, customized and extremely limited-edition book compiling some of my favorite Splotch Monsters from the recent black & white series, which I consider to be some of my best by far. Again, as with picking out works for the show, this turned out to be simultaneously tedious and highly enjoyable. I made it through Arts Cow, whose books and prints I've been more than pleased with in the past, and my hopes are that they'll arrive in time for early February. Below are a few low-res sneak peeks. In the meantime, expect more monsters up here soon!

Last Fall I was contacted via Flickr by my friend Akis in Greece who wanted to see if I was interested in having some of my Splotch Monster work shown there as part of a big exhibit in January 2011 at the Coo Basement in Thessaloniki. After some more details and some e-mail exchange, I snail-mailed him about twenty pieces, ten of which are in color, and ten from the black and white series, all to be featured as part of the Absurd Expedition, a show very much in the spirit of DADA, perhaps my personal favorite art movement of any century. Seeing some of the work from the other artists involved in the show really knocks my socks off to be a part of this event. If only I can get out there to see it now. Anyway, above and below are some of the first (amazing) flyers and posters for the exhibit. I'll have some more Splotch Monster work in an accompanying, limited run book as well, to be released later this month. I'll get more details posted soon, so stay tuned!

Sorry it's been a little while but I've been working on lots of things lately. I did finally get a chance to scan and post my latest Splotch Monster medley, this time presented horizontally, featuring ten new beasties born of India Ink. These guys should take us up through this coming Tuesday, then there will be more featured in black and white, in the form of duos, trios, quartets, quintets and more. I'm enjoying this dynamic of interaction with both the Splotch Forms and the monsters. In the meantime, I thought I'd feature a couple of snippets from the film The Mystery of Picasso. The film is a rare glimpse of the creative genius in action and is considered a national treasure in France. I was lucky to see it over a decade ago at a theater in the city of Pittsburgh, PA, and now I have a copy on DVD, which I occasionally return to for inspiration. Enjoy!

It's already November and here I've got this Novemberish-looking tree monster, inspired by some of the gnarly, sculptural trees I see in the woods along the Appalachian trail running through Northern Virginia and West Virginia. Unfortunately, I neglected to scan the Splotch Form for this one, and thankfully, it has been a long while since I've done that. As with tradition here at A Splotch Monster A Day, when I forget to scan and upload the Splotch Form, I give away the Splotch Monster. I've got someone in mind who would appreciate this hearty tree creature.

The "Wish You Were Here" art opening at The George Orwell in London looked like a good time last Friday night, and according to artist/illustrator Mr. Gresty, the event's organizer, fun was had by all. Above is a nice photo montage he sent to those of us who had a piece in the show, and below is a shot you can find at his blog. Gresty looks to be a real busy, prolific fella, so it was real cool of him to put on this show. The exhibit features over twenty participating artists and runs until November 13, 2011. So if you're in the London, England vicinity, drop on by, have a pint for me and say "hi" to some of my Splotch Monsters, who are having their own little party up there on one of the walls!

"our secret genius" exhibit, pterodactyl gallery, philadelphia, pa, 10/15/2011

Yesterday Kris and I drove out to Philly, PA to check out the Moleskine sponsored, "Our Secret Genius" art reception at the terrifically-named Pterodactyl gallery and creative space. We got to the place pretty early, and got to meet the infinitely kind, cool Helen Bradley, who played a big role in organizing the exhibit and whose work is also in the show. While the place looked like an old urban warehouse on the exterior, the inside looked pretty spectacular. It was obvious the folks who organized this show put lots of care into setting it up, and it was refreshing to work with Helen, who was open to ideas and suggestions.

Eric Reimer's work (see above) was among some of my favorite, and I think the Japanese-style fold-out Moleskine was the perfect format for his dream-like, stream-of-conscious visual tales.

Mark Brunetti had quite a few of his books of poetry at the show (see above) , including his free 'zine "The Idiom", which I look forward to reading. We talked about some possible collaborations in the near future.

I really liked having a nice little table and a sad but enthusiastic little clown to display my book full of Splotch Monsters. I was also very happy to be able to give away some of my 'zines for FREE (yes!) and provide pre-painted Splotch Forms for people to draw on and take home.

My wonderful wife Kris (above) created a beautiful sign (after my ugly, failed attempt) for my display. It's all about presentation, right?!

Eric Kennedy's abstracted forms (see above image) were also among some of my personal faves, again, well displayed in the Japanese-style Moleskine format.

Love the big collage made for the show near Pterodactyl's entrance. The show had a real good attendance, though Kris and I left about an hour before it all ended, since we got there about an hour early and by that time were pretty tired out from all the fun.

I wish we had a space like this out our way. I love how the reception was far more than a static art exhibit, as organizers allowed input from participating artists and room for creative play and visitor participation. Hopefully we see more places and events of this nature pop up in the near future.

Kris' pretty flora drawings spawned this wild collaborative draw-jam.

I've made some of the most wonderful contacts through my Flickr site, including art therapist Ira Freidman, from Saint-Petersburg, Russia. Ira teaches both kids and adults, including eleven-year-old Roman, who took some inspiration from my Splotch Monsters and seriously created something unique and amazing! our secret genius coming to philly soon

One week from today I'll be in Philly, PA to attend the opening reception for the "Our Secret Genius" show sponsored by The Moleskine Project. The show will feature both sketchbooks as art, as well as art work derived from artists' sketchbooks. The Pterodactyl gallery looks like an excellent space, and there's a good chance I'll be doing some live work that Saturday night. You'll find my Splotch Monster Moleskine on display there - the first in a series I plan on working on. Quite a few other artists will be in the exhibit, featuring their fantastic art as well, so please don't hesitate to drop on by!
